Affirmation

According to 1 Timothy 4, “For everything that God created is good…” but why is it oftentimes we don’t see ourselves as “good” or even “worthy”? If God has created us to be good, why can't we see what he sees? It may be because we don’t view ourselves or don’t identify with how God sees us due to past trauma, past experiences, past rejection by those we love, or even by our self-sabotage. Fill in your own blank. Whatever the reason may be, one of the most important things about living your life out as a Christian, it is to see and affirm yourself just as God sees you, despite what may happen in life. So let me ask you a question, do you affirm yourself?

Using my voice to affirm myself and also what God has spoken over me has helped me so much mentally. It is a daily reminder of who I am to God. When you speak and declare a thing it is so. Your words have weight to them. According to Proverbs 18:21,” the tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit”. NIV. It is important to not speak recklessly toward yourself and others because you never know how that will affect you in the future.

The goal for affirmation is to change your mindset. Repeating affirmations is feeding your brain positive thoughts and slowly drowning out the negative ones. It may take time to say them out loud, but start with one. When I began affirming myself, I started with saying “ I am Loved” and also backing it up with scripture such as John 3:16,”For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life”. It may seem weird at first, but watch how your mindset slowly starts to shift from saying it to actually believing it.

When I affirm myself, the first two words I start off with is I AM. When Jesus says “I AM” He’s literally expressing his identity and authority in whatever ways he’s defining Himself as “I Am”. As children of God when we decree the words “I am” we are literally coming into agreement with whatever words we are saying. I am blessed and highly favored. I am the head and not the tail. I am above and not beneath. Our words are doing more than we understand in the spirit realm that’s why we have to put a guard over our lips. It takes wisdom and intentionality to watch what we say and also what we believe about ourselves. It’s imperative that we see ourselves from the perspective of God.
